How cool is this? Karl Edwards, a stranger to me up to a few weeks ago, recently walked by my table at Starbucks one early morning whilst I was drinking coffee and attempting to wrangle my way through a few finishing scenes in my latest feature script. I noticed he was carrying a book by a Christian author I recognized, and so I “hailed, well met” Mr. Edwards, and we sat together and chatted for a half a sixty spot about everything from business to writing to sleep deprivation. It was amiable and resulted in an exchange of business cards, as well as some information on my part on how to go about purchasing and reading my social science fiction novel, The Cold Goodbye.
Lo and behold, Mr. Edwards actually bought the book and even more delightful, began reading it. He recently sent me an email informing me he had recommended The Cold Goodbye on his website and e-newsletter. It was more kind and generous than I could have asked for or expected, but the ego boost was pretty darn spectacular. He wrote:

I’m locked into this gripping futuristic piece by a gentleman I met at Starbucks recently. He weaves multiple story lines from around the world together into a clever conjunction of entertaining intrigue and societal commentary. He lures you along one credible path only to surprise with a twist on reality and perceptions. I hope you have as much fun reading this as I am.

Along with a link to purchase the novel, that’s going to keep me sailing for days and weeks. Thanks, Mr. Edwards!

I’ll be hosting the next Storybloging Carnival here next Monday. It’s been a while since I even participated in the Storyblogging Carnival, much less hosted, but I do plan on having a story ready, so if one story is a carnival, then you’re about to have a great night out getting sick on funnel cake and riding the Ferris wheel. If you blog and you write stories, and you post those stories on your blog, and you like attention, then send me your entry (email jeremiah.lewis@gmail.com) by Saturday, August 26, or no later than Sunday at noon with the following information:
* title
* story URL
* author name (optional)
* blog name
* blog URL
* word count
* content rating (like G, PG, R, etc.)
* a short blurb describing the story
Seriously, summer’s almost over, so you have no excuse not to post even a little tiny, tiny story. Then again, I should talk, right?
I look forward to reading all the good stuff.

I’m EXCITED!!!!
This is the week of celebration. Today marks the first of seven days, the last of which will culminate in my third anniversary of blogging. Now if that’s not special, then I’m not sure what is. And if it’s not special, at the very least it’s convoluted. Who starts celebrating their third year blog anniversary eight days before the fact?
Answer: me. Obviously. At this point I have nothing left of interest to say on the subject of either celebrations, blogging, or premature ejaculation. See first sentence if you are offended by the forbotten PE phrase. And then laugh in relief as you realize that I have used a double entendre, or as the French say, double entongue-re.
1:28am and I am hot stuff.
I received a curious email yesterday, informing me I had received a $1.00 donation. Well, that was nice, whoever you are, I thought, but $1.00 seems a little, well, little, to be useful. Minus the Paypal fee, it becomes something like $.89. I can’t even buy a can of Coke with that. Nor could I buy the soft drink, not with LA vending machine prices being what they are.
So I check the link. Seems fishy. I call up Paypal in a different window and log into my account. Hmmm. No $1.00 donation. As I suspected, my $1.00 gift was in fact an attempt to haul in a major catch. They chose the wrong man. I’m not wealthy. I’m catastrophically poor, though not according to the IRS or anyone living in the Sudan. Still, I feel cheated, having once tasted the sweet, sweet delights of a tiny donation, and then having it ripped away by that ugly realization of electronic fakery.
My sorrow was palpable. Tangible, even. It came in the form of a rotting banana. And though I love bananas dearly, I threw it out, mourning its passing. And then I went to work. It’s all good.
Celebrate the good times. Seven more days. Have yourself a martini. It’s going to be a good time.

It’s Blog Relief Day, a concerted effort to raise support for the victims of Katrina. I don’t have a ton of time to devote to linking or writing, but I will point out that if you have ever wanted to donate money but couldn’t or didn’t, now would be an excellent time to start. I’m donating to the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief fund. If that doesn’t float your boat, perhaps consider one of the many other disaster services that are accepting donations. Instapundit has a ton of links for you to choose from.
I am offering an executive producer credit on my upcoming film Red State to every person who donates money to a foundation or charity on behalf of the Katrina victims. Email me and tell me which charity you’ve donated to (keep the amount private, but it better be more than a buck!) and I will put your name in the end credits. That’s a pretty good deal.
Come on, people, make it happen!
UPDATE: If you donate money, make sure you log your donation at the TTLB Katrina Relief page.

Just the other day I received an email from Petielicious informing me he had just started a blog. Another one bites the dust. Petie should regale you with stories of his failures at seducing women (“Somehow, they all know when I’m a block away, and run in the opposite direction accordingly”), drinking Kaliber on Irish Fridays, and generally recomposing his life through the use of N’ads, senior citizen swimming belts, and a little-used exercise bike. Good luck!
This morning I received an email from my older brother James (soon to be seen in a major motion picture event called Red State, news here on Fringe over the next few months) with similar news (except for the seduction and trim life special). Please welcome Wherever You Are, You’re There to the ‘sphere o’ fear. James is being shipped over to Baghdad for six months to serve in some capacity, though even he is unsure of his duties as of now. Now that he’s been linked, he’d better maintain the discipline. There are people counting on him now.

I’m not absolutely certain, but I think I have just gotten my first “flame” from this blog! Here is an email I received Friday the 28th of February:

The author of this issue is a real american dirty rascal ! This person is shit and what he writes is bullshit! I hate him and wish that stupid hog died!

This is probably referring to the article I wrote about Iraqi oil. How exciting!
Back when I was a wee freshman in college, I prided myself on my ability to flame people who persisted in showing their stupidity on various listserves. So I was a little flametard. Don’t worry. I stopped that infantile pedantry long ago, but it gives me a thrill to recall those heady days of receiving a reply email back from the person I just totally lit up, feeling that heartbeat quicken, and then giving yourself the luxury of firing back a witty and devastating retort.
