Rest In Peace

RIP Marlon Brando (1924-2004)

UPDATE: Thanks to “a man on the hill” for pointing out the extra ‘i’ I had in the title. It has been corrected.
James Joyner reports that Marlon Brando had died at age 80. I haven’t seen much of his work, and what I have seen hasn’t impressed me, but he’s a fascinating and enigmatic figure whose “bad boy” status helped boost his work in Streetcar Named Desire. He had a troublesome history with certain directors, but is considered by many people to be the greatest actor of all time.

  1. Is the second I a typo or some new fangled abbreviation?

  3. I barely knew Brando either, but I love all the cultural references to him in other things. Like in “The Simpsons,” when Krusty encounters an elephant who lays down on command, and Krusty says, “He’s as big as Brando, but he takes direction.” Guess we have to lay off on the Brando fat jokes for a while.

  4. Yeah, I remember that! He was also mentioned in a scene in La Dolce Vita.

  5. Marlon taught me everything I know. He was a good friend, and his passing will be deeply felt for a long, long,- wait, it passed. Did anybody catch Val Kilmer’s impersonation of him in the movie ‘The Island of Doctor Moreu’? Did I spell that right? Oh well. Well, it was classic. He sort of reminds me of Sydney Greenstreet in all those Bogart movies. You know, the uh, large dude. He was cool.
